Mail delivery delayed
Mail delivery in Gauteng and the Western Cape continue to be delayed by unprotected industrial action at mail-sorting centres in Cape Town, Pretoria and the greater Johannesburg area.
Mail in Gauteng is delayed by around four weeks, the result of a previous strike from which the production environment had not yet recovered from a previous strike.
The industrial action pertains to the appointment of temporary mail workers into permanent positions. The SA Post Office is in the process of converting temporary posts into permanent positions.
Employees at post office outlets are not on strike, but a number of post offices in the Cape Town and Johannesburg areas were closed for the safety of customers and staff following threats of violence. The post office’s call centre is also closed and customers are requested to send an e-mail to Socialmedia@postoffice.co.za to enquire about mail items. They should include a tracking number with their enquiry.
According to Janras Kotsi, group executive: Mail Business, the SA Post Office is in daily discussions with organised labour to end the strike.
